Isang Litrong Liwanag
The “Isang Litrong Liwanag” project headed by philanthropist Illac Diaz and the My Shelter Foundation provides a cheap alternative to electric light-bulbs by turning plastic soda bottles into nifty light bulbs in small homes, which absorbs sunlight and spreads it out inside a house.
Based on the invention of Amy Smith, an engineer from the D-Lab in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the recycled plastic bottles are filled with water and bleach and then fixed into holes on the roof. The bottle bulbs then refract the sun’s rays to create 55-watts worth of light.
The project has reached about 10,000 homes and aims for one million by 2012.
